Life Begins and 40 (maybe)

It keeps happening, I can’t seem to stop it. I just keep getting older and older! Turning 40 is …interesting. I’m quite a level-headed person and know that age is just a number but for some reason the big 4-0 has been making me look at my life… a lot.

Physically I feel about 50 and look like I’ve not seen a mirror for 5 years, coincidentally the age of my boisterous little boy. Mentally I feel drained and like I don’t have a minute to remember who I am.

However, turning 40 has somehow made me more focused. First about how I wanted to celebrate my birthday but also about going through certain areas of my life and making some changes. Career, appearance, family, they could all do with an overhaul. I’m sure I’ll be writing blogs on all those things in the near future.

For my Birthday I planned the whole day, starting with a day of work and a lie in! After dropping the little one off at school we went for pancakes then went into town for a few hours of board games at a games café. Then we went to a nice burger place before picking up the boy for a party tea. We even managed to squeeze in a movie before bed.

I have decided I am actually going to celebrate all year round. So far I’ve visited family for afternoon tea, seen Mamma Mia with a good friend, been to the cinema on my own and spent a weekend in Bruges. I’ve been out more times this year than the past 5 years, which is why my life needs a bit of a make-over, but I’m feeling quite positive that a few tweaks to my life will make all the difference and a happier mummy can only make a happier family.

If you build it…

lego-169603_640 This week I finally managed to go to a play, okay I was actually sat in front of my laptop in my kitchen, but I did see the acclaimed production of Much Ado About Nothing with Catherine Tate and David Tennant via Digital Theatre. A fine example of Art and Technology coming together.

This weekend is my nephew’s 3rd birthday, cue party with lots of toddlers! Here’s my pick of what else you can do in London this weekend.

Open House

open door

This is the weekend that London throws open the doors of its hidden and mysterious buildings and welcomes you in. I’m wondering what people would make if they came round our flat without giving me the chance to stuff the cupboards full of the debris that covers the floor on an average day. Unannounced guests would certainly think that we’d been burgled. It looks like a child is in charge which is not far from the truth.

Shop Local

Wow! What a Bank Holiday weekend, and I don’t mean that in a good way. My poor Baba had flu and the other half had food poisoning. It all got very messy and miserable (hence no blog). I think we could all do with a quiet weekend now and with the weather looking distinctly British I think we’ll stick to pottering around locally.

More tea vicar?

teapotIn case you missed the memo, this week has been National Afternoon Tea Week. I’m not a tea drinker but I certainly like the idea of afternoon tea.

I was given a Tea for Two Voucher a couple of years ago that I was determined to use. Having registered it online to get a list of the venues I could use it in, I discovered that none were in London! And then I couldn’t exchange the voucher as it had been registered. So one rainy October afternoon I dragged my sister and her two young kids all the way to Windsor. Which seems like miles away when you don’t drive and you have two small kids in tow. To cut a long story short it was an exhausting, not entirely satisfying experience.

How to enjoy London without leaving the sofa

tv remoteWhat a week I’ve had, I’m so glad it is the weekend. Unfortunately I won’t be getting creative this weekend as, after a major setback, we’re back to looking around houses in our spare time. Not what you want to be doing after a full week at work, I want to spend the weekend with my feet up on the sofa. Which got me thinking, can I appreciate all London has to offer without actually leaving our flat?
